As can be seen from the photos work is progressing well on the boiler overhaul.
All the old crown stays have now been removed. The stays were the original stays from the last boiler overhaul by British Railways in the 1960’s. They had lasted well but got to the point where they needed renewing and this was the reason for the loco to withdrawn from service.
All the holes will be reamed out and then threaded ready to accept the new crown stays.
The lap joint will be re-riveted whilst the boiler is on its side and then dressed. The opposite side will be done by turning the boiler onto its other side.
