Following on from the post of the 27th Aug which showed a picture of the old blast pipe base with a hole in it, The London Midland Society, who are based at the Avon Valley Railway and are restoring 4123, have very kindly lent us their pattern so we can have a new blast pipe base cast.
The casting was done by Taylormade Castings in Stoke on Trent and is currently in the West Somerset Railway’s workshops at Minehead for machining.
Work is progressing well at Crewe with the boiler with all the new copper stays fitted and the large and small tubes fitted plus many more minor but just as important jobs completed. There are a few more things to be done but it is hoped that the boiler will have its hydraulic test with the boiler surveyor present before the Christmas break. A steam test will follow in early January.
The plan is to have the engine ready for the West Somerset’s Railway closure of the Somerset & Dorset Railway 50th anniversary weekend on the 5th and 6th of March 2016 followed by a gala on the 10th to the 13th March.
